†HAMLET†

SHAKESPEARE

†Ophelia†
There is a willow grows
ascaunt the brook,
That shows his hoar
leaves in the glassy stream.

Therewith fantastic garlands
did she make
Of crow-flowers, nettles,
daisies, and long purples,
That liberal shepherds give
a grosser name,
But our cold maids
do dead men's fingers call them.

There on the pendant
boughs her crownet weeds
Clamb'ring to hang,
an envious sliver broke,
When down her weedy
trophies and herself
Fell in the weeping brook.

Her clothes spread wide,
And mermaid-like
a while they bore her up;
Which time she chanted
snatches of old lauds,
As one incapable
of her own distress,
Or like a creature native
and indued unto that element.

But long it could not be
Till that her garments,
heavy with their drink,
Pulled the poor wretch
from her melodious lay
To muddy death.

Happy Easter
03.26.05 (2:50 pm)

While I am on the subject of Native Americans - one of the local churches has rented out a coliseum for its Easter services.  They are bringing a top name in Christian entertainment to sing and it should be a big ol wing ding of an event.

What's this got to do with Native Americans you ask?  What's wrong with Christian group having an Easter celebration?  Well, they've chosen to dub the event, "The TRAIL OF TEARS".  This is Oklahoma.  I, apparently, am the only person in the state that sees the irony in this.  You know that holocaust thingy where we forced removal of Native Americans from their homes and "settled" them in Oklahoma?  The LONG MARCH they were forced to endure, leaving their dead an d sick  along the way?  It's that Trail of Tears these folks are referencing.  Once these groups got to Oklahoma eventually most of "their land" was taken from them and then their young were taken, sent to CHRISTIAN missions to "civilize" them, effectively destroying their families and ways of life.  So to enfranchise the phrase for an Easter event really pisses me the fuck off.

Did I mention the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma owns the property they are renting for the event? The world has gone insane.

Shootings
03.25.05 (5:13 pm)

What happens when a kid on the Res shoots up a school?

A whole lot less than you would imagine.  Suburban white kids do it and we're flooded with information, grief counselors and "very special editions of (insert tv news zine here)".

Native Americans are one of if  not the poorest ethnic groups in the US.  Drug, physical, mental  abuse and suicide rates soar on Reservations - but you won't hear about that on the evening news either.  Why?  Most simply don't care. It's not the world they supposedly live in.  It is "other"

The reality is Native American life, on the Res, or elsewhere is a lot more like "mainstream" America than either of us would like.  The kid who went on the rampage was physically and mentally abuse - locked in a closet by his mother's boyfriend, terrorized by his alcoholic mother before a car accident left her comatose.  His father was shot down in a police confrontation on the Reservation.  Left to be raised by his grandmother, he was bullied at school and suffered from depression so deep he was put in a home school program at least once.  Red flags were everywhere - he had tried to harm himself,  his teachers were aware of violent drawings and withdrawal in the classroom, he spoke to friends about participating in a school shooting - and the clues on the internet - had anyone been savvy or caring enough to find out, would have been more than enough to have the teen hospitalized.  ...cause, the Prozac alone was not helping.

...and what of those who died?
Who is crying for them? Who is trying to give their families a better life?  Is the country reaching out to them in scores?

Then again why would they want or even expect the US's help - at least the governments' - it's not like they've been given a square deal in the past.

As a post script, I read where at least one of the boys was shot while trying to shield a few of his female classmates.  His father called him a hero - "a true warrior."  It brought tears to my eyes.

The Late Great Gonzo
03.25.05 (5:42 am)
I was half way through the first page and I knew a tween shouldn't be reading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Not that it stopped me, the good Dr., his lawyer on all those drugs speeding through the desert terrorizing hitchikers and expanding my world through frenetic, vivid prose.

I had read Thompson before, some little girls subscribed to 17, but I wanted Rolling Stone and with the help of an unwitting grandmother, was resubscribed every year on my birthday. God bless her.

There was something about the Vegas book, something visceral that even I knew then was special. That Thompson was a mad genius, not just some old drunk. Looking back, it was probably he that changed the way I looked at the world. Changed how I related ever day events and captured and put them to memory.

He's been dead a few weeks now, self inflicted gunshot wound... Never thought he'd go out that way, never. Somehow, I saw him in a hospital bed sneaking smokes in between gasps on an oxygen mask and screaming obscenities at bedraggled nurses and surgeons, fighting his mortality til the wheels fell off.

I don't even know how to end this entry.
Bang...

IDOLIZED
03.24.05 (5:04 pm)
Res Kitty is digging AI this year.  Bo Bice and Nadia are her top picks while Carrie and the other blonde chick tie for 3rd.

For sex appeal, Constantine was the front runner early on but sadly, like most young men, he peaked early and Bice is winning that category too.  Con baby does get props for coolest name ever on Idol though.  I may even name my next pet after him.

Lies, yesterday, today and tomorrow
03.13.05 (11:26 am)
The Lie

Go, Soul, the body's guest,

Upon a thankless arrant:

Fear not to touch the best;

The truth shall be thy warrant:

Go, since I needs must die,

And give the world the lie.

Say to the court, it glows

And shines like rotten wood;

Say to the church it shows

What's good, and doth no good:

If church and court reply,

Then give them both the lie.

Tell potentates, they live

Acting by others' action;

Not loved unless they give

Not strong but by affection:

If potentates reply,

Give potentates the lie.

Tell men of high condition

That manage the estate,

Their purpose is ambition,

Their practice only hate:

And if they once reply,

Then give them all the lie.

Tell them that brave it most

They beg for more by spending,

Who, in their greatest cost,

Seek nothing but commending:

And if they make reply,

Then give them all the lie.

Tell zeal it wants devotion,

Tell love it is but lust;

Tell time it metes but motion,

Tell flesh it is but dust:

And wish them not reply,

For thou must give the lie.

Tell age it daily wasteth;

Tell honour how it alters;

Tell beauty how she blasteth;

Tell favour how it falters:

And as they shall reply,

Give every one the lie.

Tell wit how much it wrangles

In tickle points of niceness;

Tell wisdom she entangles

Herself in over-wiseness:

And when they do reply,

Straight give them both the lie.

Tell physic of her boldness;

Tell skill it is pretension;

Tell charity of coldness;

Tell law it is contention:

And as they do reply,

So give them still the lie.

Tell fortune of her blindness;

Tell nature of decay;

Tell friendship of unkindness;

Tell justice of delay:

And if they will reply,

Then give them all the lie.

Tell arts they have no soundness,

But vary by esteeming;

Tell schools they want profoundness,

And stand too much on seeming:

If arts and schools rely,

Give arts and schools the lie.

Tell faith it's fled the city;

Tell how the country erreth;

Tell manhood shakes off pity

And virtue least preferreth:

And if they do reply,

Spare not to give the lie.

So when thou hast, as I

Commanded thee, done blabbing

--Although to give the lie

Deserves no less than stabbing--

Stab at thee he that will,

No stab thy soul can kill.

Furbaby MOMMY DEAREST
03.12.05 (8:56 pm)
Remember Ms. Skitty?  The Furbaby I slashed while trying to groom her?  Well, guess who has an upper respiratory infection?  Oh yes, we went back to the vet today.  After I promised the Doc not to cry, he surgically removed Skitten's paw and claws from my arm, took her temperature (105.3) the most undignified way possible, and announced I would be giving her medicine by dropper twice a day until it was gone.  He also gave her a shot.

I see the same expression on Skitty's face that I get when my stepmother starts to give me advice.  This is not good.  I will be sleeping with my doors locked and the lights on.  If you don't hear from me in 48 hours call the police.

5 Days
03.11.05 (11:28 pm)

It's been 5 days since I blogged.

5 days since, "the incident."

Since the blood.

The tears.

The inevitable spiral to the depths of depression and madness.

5 days since I sent an innocent to the emergency room.

5 days.

*note, it is recommended that one groom one's cat not with scissors but with an electric shaver.
