†HAMLET†
†
SHAKESPEARE
†
†Ophelia†
There is a willow grows
ascaunt the brook,
That shows his hoar
leaves in the glassy stream.
Therewith fantastic garlands
did she make
Of crow-flowers, nettles,
daisies, and long purples,
That liberal shepherds give
a grosser name,
But our cold maids
do dead men's fingers call them.
There on the pendant
boughs her crownet weeds
Clamb'ring to hang,
an envious sliver broke,
When down her weedy
trophies and herself
Fell in the weeping brook.
Her clothes spread wide,
And mermaid-like
a while they bore her up;
Which time she chanted
snatches of old lauds,
As one incapable
of her own distress,
Or like a creature native
and indued unto that element.
But long it could not be
Till that her garments,
heavy with their drink,
Pulled the poor wretch
from her melodious lay
To muddy death.

It would be really really great if all the armchair psychologists would go out and fuck themselves.
"ooh, you poor dear, depression really gets worse during the holidays you know..."
Really? Is that the problem. Well, then, I'll just tell myself that and things will be all sunshine and light. What a fucking genius you are. Tell me, does the little light in the refrigerator stay on when you close the door or does it go off?
Good night Doctor Brothers.

| lofty ideations |
| 11.17.04 (6:36 pm) |

Some people's idea of lofty aspirations are intermingled with climbing social ladders and making a certain number of digits before the little .00 on their paychecks.
With other's it's all okay as long as they have an acceptable job, 401k and little piece of the Earth they can call their own.
Me, well, yeah, I want a secure old age, but there's this part of me that wants to do more than sit around and make sure people dot their i's and cross their t's on loan forms. I want to help people. I want them to know they are not alone in this world. That there are people who care enough to help - emotionally, physically, psychicly, monetarily for chrissakes. Will the Peace Corp take a head case? It's been a while since I looked into the organization... What are the alternatives for a gal with a MA in Anthropology and the success rate of skinny thigh cream?
Fuck.
Here's an interesting tidbit, TX Peace Corp offices look out on Dealey Plaza - you know, where JFK breathed his last. It was very bizarre, realizing where I was, what I was doing there and how intertwined the two were/are. I wonder if it was conscious decision - surely it was...

It's been a while since I've checked in here. ...I've blogged a bit, but I 've not checked in, not fully.
The therapist says I am good at that - always have been, "but the woman in me needs to learn not to fade out and instead deal with the real emotions." psychobabblepsychobabbleb lahblahblah
Erm yeah. So here goes. My grandmother, exes mother, and ex for that matter need to figure out things will never be the same and to honor that. I can't control what they do - but I can let it piss me off - that's healthy. To go to my grave cursing the ground they walk on - not healthy. I really don't want that anyway, I don't do that. I just don't want to be reminded in the middle of a lovely conversation that I have pretty much lost everything, have had to start over and btw, your ex is doing fabulously without you... kay? Is that so much to ask?
See it takes hours, sometimes days to climb outta that murky ditch where my self esteem sinks to the bottom and gets stained. The you gotta bleach the self esteem and run it through the rinise cycle a couple of times to get that sterile smell out - maybe even use some downy fabric softener on it... It's time consuming.
The job is well, one step forward, two back. I defy cliche!!!! MUAHAHAHA !As an alternative, Wal-Mart is looking better all the time. Humiliating -but better. I've heard weird stories do they have benefits or not??? Someone fill me in.
In other news,I think I am depressing my cats. Seriously - they are exhibiting behavioural problems - manifesting of course, in the form of inappropriate POO deposits. Let your imagination run wild.

I've a friend that's gone awol from my life, gone south even. It's an ugly feeling. It's an angry feeling. It's a helpless feeling. You can't live someone else's life for them. You might be able to share moments or empathize, but you can't take responsibility for them or their actions...
I just hope I don't have to grieve for him...

| Disbelief, Outrage and Denial |
| 11.03.04 (3:21 pm) |
|
I remember thinking last night that I would weep with relief if I woke up in the morning and Kerry had been elected President.
Instead, I woke up turned MSNBC and realized that nothing had changed, that today would be like any other day, except that now there was legislation denying some Americans rights easily afforded to others on the basis of who they choose to love, our President had indeed been elected by a clear majority of persons with a genuine belief in his methods, and lest we forget, an overwhelming majority of legislator’s backing him and his machine.
I write this in a state of suspended belief. There are people in rapturous celebration over the outcome. People I love and even look up to voted this way. What about the lies we were told? The atrocities we’ve committed? Would we as a nation rather put our belief in lies than admit to mistakes - than to give ourselves a chance to rectify those mistakes?
I will not weep for this President. I will not keep silent, and I will not believe in some warped sense of manifest destiny this country and its people continue to perpetuate in our minds and force on the world.

Curious,
Due to a strange turn of events, I did, in fact vote today. HA! Haven't missed an election yet. For the first time ever however, I voted for a straight Democratic ticket.
Curiouser,
I may be the only person in my state to vote pro-same sex marriage, pro liquor by the vote, pro gambling and pro screwing smokers over once again (it will benefit the Indian smoke shops after all...).
Off to go sit on my liberal ass and wait for the returns to come in. Weep with me comrades. Weep.

| A few Thoughts from Abroad |
| 11.02.04 (3:13 pm) |
|
Thoughts, from a dear friend and citizen of the world, Dr. Alasdair Brooks...
So, if the USA was in the same timezone as Australia, I could go to bed tonight with a decent idea of who's going to win the election - the potential intervention of lawyers aside. But I can't, so here's a scream of frustration from someone who has no influence on today's events.
If I had a vote, there's no secret to how I would use it...
1) While I supported - or at least understood - the war in Afghanistan, the removal of military resources from that theatre to Iraq has left Afghanistan teetering on the brink of anarchy (again). I think it's wonderful that so many Afghans turned out to vote in generally free (within limits) elections, and I'm willing to believe that Hamid Karzai is a decent person. But he controls less than half the country, and Taliban and warlords control the rest - and the opium crop is reaching record levels. We fiddle in Iraq while Kabul burns. Currently, that's a metaphor - but am I the only person who wonders how long it might be until that metaphor becomes a reality?.
And just how much closer are we to catching that nasty Mr. Bin Laden anyway?
2) And the war in Iraq? No weapons of mass destruction. Insufficient military forces on the ground. The abolition of the Iraqi army. The initial support of the corrupt Ahmed Chalabi. The naive assumptions about the ease with which Iraq would be pacified. The looting of the national museum. Fallujah.
Abu Ghraib.
I wish I could say with confidence that even those who supported the war are forced to concede that the post-war management of Iraq has been blisteringly incompetent. But I can't.
And while we are all better off without the murderous, evil bastard that is Saddam Hussein, I ask rhetorically whether we're all better off with an increasingly unstable middle east, and a political climate in the latter that - anecdotally - seems to be increasing resentment against the west, thereby increasing sympathy towards the very terrorists that Bush wishes to seem to be fighting. Well? Are we?
3) Guantanamo Bay is an obscenity against the very values for which the USA traditionally stands for. It makes it possible for any tinpot anti-American to dismiss the USA as wantonly hypocritical. How can any US administration sincerely attempt to advance the cause of democracy worldwide - and, God help me, I agree with Bush that we can't just write off the entire Arab world as unready for democracy (though that's where the agreement ends) - when it selectively and arbitrarily denies freedom and the rule of law to anyone that it deems unworthy of such?
4) The US economy has been comprehensively mismanaged. The current president has never seen a spending bill he didn't like. A modest budget surplus has ballooned into a massive budget deficit. I won't claim to be an international macro-economist, but I ask another rhetorical question... If the CEO of a major American corporation had managed to turn a profit in the hundreds of millions into 400 million dollars in the red, how much longer would the shareholders tolerate that CEO? Even one with an MBA from Harvard business school.
For the record, I'm not going to sit here and dismiss people who vote for Bush as 'stupid'. Several tens of millions of people will vote for the president on November the second, and they are not stupid. I might perhaps argue that many of them might possibly benefit from learning more about the world outside the United States, but they're not stupid. Ultimately, we snotty foreigners have to accept that the moral values for which George Bush stands are shared by nearly half of all Americans, and that's why Bush might win. And if I think many of Bush's supporters might benefit from understanding the outside world, I think that equally many non-Americans who dismiss the moral and cultural values that motivate them would do better to try and understand why so many Americans feel that way rather than dismiss half a nation of 290 million people as idiots. Because that isn't helpful to anyone.
In the end, I don't know who'se going to win the election, but for those looking for omens: since 1936, whenever the Washington Redskins American football team has lost their last home game before an election, the incumbent has lost.
This last weekend, the Redskins lost at home.
Here's to President Kerry.
Please?
