†HAMLET†
†

SHAKESPEARE
†

†Ophelia†
There is a willow grows
ascaunt the brook,
That shows his hoar
leaves in the glassy stream.

Therewith fantastic garlands
did she make
Of crow-flowers, nettles,
daisies, and long purples,
That liberal shepherds give
a grosser name,
But our cold maids
do dead men's fingers call them.

There on the pendant
boughs her crownet weeds
Clamb'ring to hang,
an envious sliver broke,
When down her weedy
trophies and herself
Fell in the weeping brook.

Her clothes spread wide,
And mermaid-like
a while they bore her up;
Which time she chanted
snatches of old lauds,
As one incapable
of her own distress,
Or like a creature native
and indued unto that element.

But long it could not be
Till that her garments,
heavy with their drink,
Pulled the poor wretch
from her melodious lay
To muddy death.

I Wanna Be A Maytag Repair Man
12.31.03 (9:40 am)
That was the name of a song a garage band from my home town played at out Senior Follies. Their name was Uranus.

I obviously have nothing to say - WAIT!

I do have something to say, albeit a little late. To the asshats at CNBC or whatever news station was having a poll on whether or not the US should send aid to the earthquake victims in Iran. You cold hearted cockknockers. Yes. I don't care if it was our worst enemies - common people were involved inthis tragedy not some ephemeral industrial/military complex conspiracy. Merry Christmas you filthy cocknockers...

(Whew, that took a load off my chest.)

12.29.03 (8:25 am)
#10: "I think that gay marriage should be between a man and a woman." —Arnold Schwarzenegger, during the California recall campaign

#9: When U.S. interrogators asked Saddam Hussein how he was, he responded: "I am sad because my people are in bondage." When offered a glass of water, he replied: "If I drink water I will have to go to the bathroom and how can I use the bathroom when my people are in bondage?"

#8: "You think you are big enough to make me, you little wimp? Come on, come over here and make me, I dare you…You little fruitcake. You little fruitcake. I said you are a fruitcake." —Rep. Peter Stark (D-Calif.) to Rep. Scott McInnis (R-Colo.), after McInnis told him to "shut up" during a legislative dispute

#7: "George Bush was not elected by a majority of the voters in the United States. He was appointed by God." —Lt. Gen. William Boykin, the defense undersecretary in charge of hunting down top terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan

#6: "My vision is to make the most diverse state on earth, and we have people from every planet on the earth in this state. We have the sons and daughters of every, of people from every planet, of every country on earth." —Former California Gov. Gray Davis, during the recall campaign

#5: "I have no problem with homosexuality — I have a problem with homosexual acts." —Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA)

#4: "Maybe we need a very small nuke thrown off on Foggy Bottom to shake things up like Newt Gingrich wants to do." —Television evangelist and Christian Coalition founder Pat Robertson, on wiping out the State Department

#3: "My answer is bring 'em on." —President George W. Bush, challenging militants attacking U.S. forces in Iraq

#2: "Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns — the ones we don't know we don't know." —Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld

And the award for the Dumbest Quote of 2003:

"I triple guarantee you. There are no American infidels in Baghdad." —Iraqi Information Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf (AKA "Baghdad Bob")

Marilyn, Freud and an untimely death
12.29.03 (8:07 am)
[image]DRAMA_621857982.jpg[/image]

Christmas Eve I watched an interesting documentary on the medical channel. It posed the hypothesis that (sorry conspiracy lovers) Marilyn Monroe's mental health led to her suicide. (Smacks self in head.)

It seems Miss Monroe's mother and Grandmother had both been institutionalized, a fear Marilyn lived with all her life. The Freudian therapy she was receiving coupled with Strasberg's teaching of method acting was quite possibly the worst thing that could have happened to her. ...then of course there were the Psychiatric versions of Dr. Feelgood, Marilyn frequented.

The Doctors and therapists in the documentary put forth the idea that had Monroe been treated today, she would have most likely been put on a course of anti-depressants (which did not exist when she was alive) and received cognitive therapy - a therapy focusing on the here and now and strategies to deal with the future

I love Him
12.27.03 (9:05 am)
I love my baby cousin.

He's now about 6'4, an all-american/handsome/str aight A's, boy next door kind of kid. Did I mention he plays the drums? A Sr. in High School he was just offered an appointment at the Air force Academy. (Free of charge mind you.)

He's been wanting to be an aeronautical engineer since he was ten. He's been to flying camps and summer session at the Academy. It's all he's talked about until about a year ago.

Now he has changed his mind. Apparently you, "can't ride bulls and go to the academy at the same time." I fell out. Too stunned to speak, I just sat there, mouth agape, while he talked about what other choices he has.

Okay, so he does have other scholarship offers. I told you the kid was book smart. But, but, but, THE AIR FORCE ACADEMY! I think of the possibilities for his future and the mind boggles. I know what a degree from a "well-known, auspicious" school can do for you. It takes you places! No matter how well you did in college or grad school a, "yeah, I graduated from UT or A&M" etc and so forth (we are in Ok/Texas) can boost your chances at a good career. If you are of Ivy league status think, Yale or Harvard over a state school. We all have our socio-economic status to burden.

Where was I?

Yeah, I just sat there and bit my lip as my stepmother encouraged his bull-riding, "I would rather have a kid of mine ride a bull than play football any old day." "Less chance of getting hurt." Whatever. The young man already has broken an arm, my father's bullriding career was ended when both of his legs were *shattered* and have I mentioned the countless times I've seen people attended to by paramedics or rushed to the hospital because of the &#$% event?

There are a handful of people in the US that can make money from the, "sport." It's highly competitive. It's addictive. It's an adrenaline rush. ...and cute little cowgirls in tight jeans love a bull-rider. (My father always encouraged me to stay away from them.) Dad's not encouraging or discouraging the boy, but I can see it in his face, he doesn't think his parents should allow it.

I myself was never presented with a choice. You are going to college. Period. I always assumed I would be going to my local University so I never considered going away to school. (Great example of the lack of experience a 17 year old has to make such a choice.) I have a decent education, but wow, had I gone to OU or Tulane or even LSU, there would be so many more opportunities out there for me.

I just wish the kid had that kind of insight before he made his choice. I was reminded later that we all have our own lives to map out. I don't care. I want to force his butt to go to the ACADEMY! Call me selfish.

I hope he make a million dollars at bull riding. I hope he never injures another bone in his body, retires at 30 and lives on a beautiful ranch in the Hill Country. I wish him every success in the world. ...and if he doesn't I still wish him every success in the world with the choices he will soon be making.

I love him.

Have a Happy Status Symbol!
12.25.03 (11:37 am)
I was gifted with a Liz Claiborne hot water bottle. My family is nuts. :?

Note: although I appreciate the hot water bottle it is a bit bizarre don't you think?

The boyfriend bought me a lovely pair of diamond earrings, the folks bought me clothes and the "in-laws" bought us several home decor items. I am very blessed. ...and now my feet will stay warm with my designer hot water bottle...

The bf's nephew's were little dolls. One even asked me to open all his gifts for him. The things I bought went over very well too. The nephews went crazy over the rockem sockem blow up boxing glove set and BF's younger bro adored the gift certificate! (always give the older kids $ of some sort)

As for the adults well, Dad loved his, "Idiot's Guide to the Old West," book - apparently he thinks it should be taught as curricula... I can never go wrong with HarleyDavidson for the Boyfirend and perfume always goes over well with the ladies.

Tomorrow we get together with my side of the family for a Christmas supper Tex Mex style! Woohoo and pass the enchiladas!

I'm having a happy Christmas. I hope it's the beginning of a tradition.

Gotta go, the Turkey is frying, the deviled eggs need deviling and I am still in my PJ's. Take care all!

PS - ...and I just know some of you thought this post was going to be entirely cynical. A bit shallow maybe - but it was NOT cynical.

Why? Well, it is Monday...
12.22.03 (8:22 pm)
The year is almost over.

I've had one helluva set of 365 days. (give or take a few months.)

Work has been sparse. I've gone from temp job to temp job and contract to contract only to find I am no more secure than I was last year at this time.

I'm healthier - god knows. (Pick a god, any god.) I've had a lot of time to sit back and reflect on the time I've spent on this little blue globe and decided I've wasted a lot of it.

Not all who wander are lost Tolkien said. It's a good thing we never met. The quote would have been, "not all who wander are lost except for that DeLashaw girl." "She never seems to make the right turn." ...let's face it, that's not very powerful for a quote.

I wander in life, in dreams and in fantasy. The real world is a bit hard for me. I love my dreams. I know the difference between them and the waking world - they're just safer. Safer, prettier, calmer and the imagined tempests, scattered as they may be, are always calmed.

The waking world, life, isn't like that though. You can't plan a minute no less the course of your life. You can't decide how others will act or react. Your own strengths and weaknesses are uncomfortably amplified and, if dwelt on too long can be paralyzing.

Sometimes I wonder if I cause things to happen or if things happen to me. I wonder what a shrink would have to say about that? I wonder if other people wonder about such things. I wonder, then I wander, then I get lost.

JOHN LENNON LYRICS
HAPPY CHRISTMAS (WAR IS OVER) LYRICS

So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
Ans so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear
And so this is Christmas
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones
The world is so wrong
And so happy Christmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let's stop all the fight
A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear
And so this is Christmas
And what have we done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
Ans so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young
A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear
War is over over
If you want it
War is over
Now...

Feeling a Little Gonzo
12.22.03 (12:06 pm)

I'm Going To Go Back There Someday.

This looks familiar, vaguely familiar,
Almost unreal, yet, it's too soon to feel yet.
Close to my soul, and yet so far away.
I'm going to go back there someday.

Sun rises, night falls, sometimes the sky calls.
Is that a song there, and do I belong there?
I've never been there, but I know the way.
I'm going to go back there someday.

Come and go with me, it's more fun to share,
We'll both be completely at home in midair.
We're flyin', not walkin', on featherless wings.
We can hold onto love like invisible strings.

There's not a word yet for old friends who've just met.
Part heaven, part space, or have I found my place?
You can just visit, but I plan to stay.
I'm going to go back there someday.
I'm going to go back there someday.

1. Smiegel was nasty before he got the ring, I think he was using it as a crutch.

2. Aragorn is sexier when he's dirty.

3. Not enough Legolas face time.

4. I think I saw some of the Mountain Men working as extras in Pirates of the Carribean.

5. I laughed when the spider got Frodo.

6. Did not want to see the finger bitten off. Sometimes less is more.

7. Éowyn, and they included her in the movie why? She deserved better.

8. Intricately carved architecture on a mass scale is not that sturdy.

9. Those were really big Eagles.

10. That last moment between Aragorn and Arwen - could he have shoved his tongue down her throat any further?

11. I love Hobbitts's.

12. Where did all the Hobbits and dwarves go? What age of Middle Earth did they hop ship?

I am the Star

Daily life is harsh, and most of us constantly seek escape from it in fantasies and dreams. Stars feed on this weakness; standing out from others through a distincitve and appealing type, they make us want to watch them. At the same time, they are vague and ethereal, keeping their distance, and letting us imagine more than is there. Their dreamlike quality works on our unconscious. Learn to become an object of fascination by projecting the glittering but elusive presence of the star.

Symbol: The Idol. A piece of stone carved into the shape of a god, perhaps glittering with gold and jewels. The eyes of the worshippers fill the stone with life, imagining it to have real powers. Its shape allows them to see what they want to see - a god - but it actually just a piece of stone. The god lives in their imaginations.

The Dumbing Down of Drama.
12.19.03 (11:44 am)
I remember being in Jr. High. I was well informed and very mature for my age. Then came high school. I was a whiz. A'ight, maybe I thought I was above some of my classes/classmates but I was quick, curious and acted on things. College only amplified my high school achievments.

Somewhere between grad school and now all that has been lost. Instead of the classics I read comic books, watch too many HBO original series, and have an unhealthy addiction to Cher. Have I mentioned my closest confidant is my cat? What happened?

I am a terrible human being.

My boyfriend is currently sitting in the living room by himself while I watch E.R. and play on the internet. He had an AWFUL day. Other people screwing things up making his job harder - he usually never gets mad, but it got to him this time.

Instead of comforting him, I am being selfish and doing my own thing. He made dinner. He asked if I wanted to watch the Lonesome Dove DVD I bought him for his birthday - I begged off. I'm just not in the mood ya know?

I am a terrible, terrible person.

FIFTEEN THINGS THAT IT TOOK ME OVER 48 YEARS TO LEARN
by Dave Barry
1. Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.
2. If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be "meetings."
3. There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."
4. People who want to share their religious views with you almost never want you to share yours with them.
5. You should not confuse your career with your life.
6. Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance.
7. Never lick a steak knife.
8. The most destructive force in the universe is gossip.
9. You will never find anybody who can give you a clear and compelling reason why we observe daylight savings time.
10. You should never say anything to a woman that even remotely suggests that you think she's pregnant unless you can see an actual baby emerging from her at that moment.
11. There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal about your birthday. That time is age eleven.
12. The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside, we ALL believe that we are above average drivers.
13. A person, who is nice to you, but rude to the waiter, is not a nice person. (This is very important. Pay attention. It never fails.)
14. Your friends love you anyway.
15. Never be afraid to try something new. Remember that a lone amateur built the Ark. A large group of professionals built the Titanic.

My dominant hue
12.14.03 (8:44 pm)
you are seagreen
#2E8B57

Your dominant hues are cyan and green. Although you definately strive to be logical you care about people and know there's a time and place for thinking emotionally. Your head rules most things but your heart rules others, and getting them to meet in the middle takes a lot of your energy some days.

Your saturation level is higher than average - You know what you want, but sometimes know not to tell everyone. You value accomplishments and know you can get the job done, so don't be afraid to run out and make things happen.

Your outlook on life can be bright or dark, depending on the situation. You are flexible and see things objectively.

[LINE]
You know I'm a dreamer
But my heart's of gold
I had to run away high
So I wouldn't come home low

Just when things went right
It doesn't mean they were
always wrong
Just take this song and you'll
never feel
Left all alone

Take me to your heart
Feel me in your bones
Just one more night
And I'm comin' off this
Long & winding road

I'm on my way
Well, I'm on my way
Home sweet home
Tonight tonight
I'm on my way
I'm on my way
Home sweet home

You know that I seem
To make romantic dreams
Up in lights, fallin' off
The silver screen

My heart's like an open book
For the whole world to read
Sometimes nothing -
keeps me together

daria
You are Daria from Daria. You are full of sadness
and everything bad. You love to read, and you
are very smart. However, you are cool to
others. Even though you are so smart and quiet,
you seem cool to others. You get mad at others
quickly, but you only show it in your face. You
are very anti-social, but you do have a couple
of friends one or two. You are pretty
depressed. You have very little happiness in
you. You are very different from others. You
make the school seem much better because you
are not the exact same as the other girls. You
are not very religious, however. Actually, you
are not religious at all. Most likely, you are
going to die of cancer - sorry for that. Good
luck desperate person!

LOL!
I myself was once part of a pretty tight group of these ladies and found myself at the other end of a smackdown by some today.

Why can’t we all get along folks?

The Internet is a funny creature. (…and my spellcheck just told me that it is a proper noun.) Alliances are made and lines are drawn. In reality we are only seeing a tiny portrait of those who post to forums or blog their hearts out. I had to learn that the hard way I guess. Started one too many flame wars, argued too long with trolls, and definitely left myself open for attack – more than once. I let it all affect me too. Never again. Those days are over for me. (‘cept when I slip) Tired of the Karma whip slapping me in the ass.

The truth of the situation is that I have the power to walk away from a fight, not post my opinion on everything and not take things too personally. (If it were just that easy.)

Repeat after me, step back from the computer. Breathe.

melancholia, the infinite sadness and the mundane.
12.12.03 (1:00 pm)
I’m at my folks right now enjoying the uncomfortable silence that pervades all of my visits. I worship my Dad but can’t talk to him. It tears me up.

What can I do? I open conversation and am greeted by yes or no answers or a grunt. You know how to screw with someone asking open ended question? Look at them, twist the toothpick in your mouth, take a drag off your cigarette, say hrmph, and continue watching the National Finals Rodeo on television. Grrrrr.

He has more in common with the young couple he rents a house to than he does with me – they sure communicate better. Makes me sad ...not to mention jealous.

On to happier topics.

Muggles had her stitches out today. She’s doing really well – much fatter than when I left her. A fat cat is a healthy cat – and I don’t care if they are supposed to eat people food or not. I am here to make her life as pleasurable as possible.

Applied for a job today and paid a few bills. Need to go online and check out some class info for this spring. I still can’t decide what I want to be/can be when I grow up. Saying you’re an archaeologist is cool and all, but damn, these drives are getting tiring.

I’m feeling my age too – not necessarily physically. Oy, the kids these days!!!!! They make me feel so old. I learned on this last trip that the world revolves around Manhattan, NYC, but only if it is not revolving around Austin, TX. BAH! They should know the world revolves around ME! Seriously, if I had to hear, “in the city,” or, “well in Austin,” one more time I was gonna go mental. …more mental. (Eh, they were good kids, I just needed someone my age to talk to.)

Things not to do in ROtK....
12.10.03 (9:31 pm)
=http://sastinfans.bekkis.com target=_blank [image]SAF.bmp[/image]
1. Stand up halfway through the movie and yell loudly, "Wait... where the hell is Harry Potter?"

2. Block the entrance to the theater while screaming: "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!"

3. Play a drinking game where you have to take a sip every time someone says: "The Ring."

4. Point and laugh whenever someone dies.

5. Ask everyone around you if they think Gandalf went to Hogwarts.

6. Finish off every one of Elrond's lines with "Mr. Anderson."

7. When Aragorn is crowned king, stand up and at the top of your lungs sing, "And I did it.... MY way...!"

8. Talk like Gollum all through the movie. At the end, bite off someone's finger and fall down the stairs.

9. Dress up as old ladies and reenact "The Battle of Helms Deep" Monty Python style.

10. When Denethor lights the fire, shout "Barbecue!"

11. Every time Elrond appears, shout out (in your best 'Dobby' voice) "Clothes! Master gave Elrond Clothes!"

12. In TTT when the Ents decide to march to war, stand up and shout "RUN FOREST, RUN!"

13. Every time someone kills an Orc, yell: "That's what I'm Tolkien about!" See how long it takes before you get kicked out of the theatre.

14. During a wide shot of a battle, inquire, "Where's Waldo?"

15. Talk loudly about how you heard that there is a single frame of a nude Elf hidden somewhere in the movie.

16. Start an Orc sing-a-long.

17. Come to the premiere dressed as Frankenfurter and wander around looking terribly confused.

18. When they go in the paths of the dead, wait for tense moment and shout, "I see dead people!"

19. Imitate what you think a conversation between Gollum, Dobby and Yoda would be like.

20. Release a jar of daddy-long-legs into the theater during the Shelob scene.

21. Wonder out loud if Aragorn is going to run for governor of California.

22. When Shelob comes on, exclaim, "Man! Charlotte's really let herself go!"

24. After the movie, say "Lucas could have done it better."

Its planet is Jupiter, rules the metal tin and the jewel Sapphire.
In its medical action it approaches the realm of ultraviolet.
It cools the nerves, is magnetic and antiseptic.
Purple and violet speak of honor,

I really can't stay

I've got to away
(but baby it's cold outside)
This evening has been
(been hoping that you'd drop in)
So very nice
(i'll hold your hands, they're just like ice)
My mother will start worry
(beautiful whats your hurry)
My father will be pacing the floor
(listen to the fireplace roar)
So really i'd better scurry
(beautiful please don't hurry)
but maybe just a half a drink more
(put some records on while i pour)
the neighbors might think
(baby it's bad out there)
say what's in this drink
(no cabs to be had out there)
i wish i knew how
(your eyes are like starlight now)
to break this spell
(i'll take your hat, your hair looks swell)
i ought to say "no, no, no sir"
(mind if i move in closer)
at least i'm gonna say that i tried
(what's the sense in hurtin' my pride)
i really can't stay
(oh baby don't hold out)
both:baby it's cold out side
i simply must go
(but baby it's cold outside)
the answer is no
(but baby it's cold outside)
your welcome has been
(how lucky that you droped in)
so nice and warm
(look out the window at the snow)
my sister will be suspicious
(gosh your lips look delcious)
my brother will be there at the door
(waves upon the tropical shore)
my maiden aunts mind is vicious
(gosh your lips are delicous)
but maybe just a cigarette more
(never such a blizzard before)
i've gotta get home
(but baby you'd freeze out there)
say lend me a coat
(it's up to your knees out there)
you've really been grand
(i thrill when you touch my hand)
but don't you see?
(how can you do this thing to me?)
there's bound to be talk tomorrow
(think of my lifelong sorrow)
at least there will be plenty implied
(if you got namonia and died)
i really can't stay
(get over that old out)
both:baby it's cold
baby it's cold outside

Out Here On My Own, child of the 80's gone melancholy.
12.07.03 (8:44 pm)
Out Here On My Own
Irene Cara
(music by Michael Gore, lyrics by Lesley Gore)
"Fame" soundtrack

Sometimes I wonder where I've been,
Who I am,
Do I fit in.
Make believein' is hard alone,
Out here on my own.

We're always provin' who we are,
Always reachin'
For that risin' star
To guide me far
And shine me home,
Out here on my own.

When I'm down and feelin' blue,
I close my eyes so I can be with you.
Oh, baby be strong for me;
Baby belong to me.
Help me through.
Help me need you.

Until the morning sun appears
Making light
Of all my fears,
I dry the tears
I've never shown,
Out here on my own.

But when I'm down and feelin' blue,
I close my eyes so I can be with you.
Oh, baby be strong for me;
Baby, belong to me.
Help me through.
Help me need you.

Sometimes I wonder where I've been,
Who I am,
Do I fit in.
I may not win,
But I can't be thrown,
Out here on my own,

Out here on my own.

Why is someone named Montgomery Gentry singing the best Christmas song ever written and not it's writer - Robert Earl Keen?
[LINE]

Mom got drunk and Dad got drunk
At our Christmas party
We were drinkin' champagne punch
And homemade eggnog
Little sister brought her new boyfriend
He was a Mexican
We didn't know what to think of him
Til he sang Feliz Navidad
Feliz Navidad

Brother Ken brought his kids with him
The three from his first wife Lynn
And the two identical twins
From his second wife MaryNell
Of course he brought his new wife Kaye
Who talks all about AA
Chain smokin' while the stero plays
Noel, Noel, The first Noel

Carve the turkey turn the ball game on
Mix Margaritas when the eggnog's gone
Send somebody to the Quik-Pak store
We need some ice and an extention cord
A can of bean dip and some Diet Rite
A box of tampons and some Marlboro Lights
Hallelujah everybody say cheese
Merry Christmas from the family

Fran and Rita drove from Harlingen
I can't remember how I'm kin to them
But when they tried to plug their motorhome in
They blew our christmas lights
Cousin David knew just what went wrong
So we all waited on our front lawn
He threw the breaker and the lights came on
And we sang Silent Night
Oh Silent Night

Carve the turkey turn the ballgame on
Make Bloody Marys cause we all want one
Send somebody to the Stop 'n Go
We need some celery and a can of fake snow
A bag of lemons and some Dite Sprite
A box of tampons and some Salem Lights
Hallelujah everybody say cheese
Merry Christmas from the family

Feliz Navidad.

They even punked out and wouldn't talk about the tampons.
