†HAMLET†
†

SHAKESPEARE
†

†Ophelia†
There is a willow grows
ascaunt the brook,
That shows his hoar
leaves in the glassy stream.

Therewith fantastic garlands
did she make
Of crow-flowers, nettles,
daisies, and long purples,
That liberal shepherds give
a grosser name,
But our cold maids
do dead men's fingers call them.

There on the pendant
boughs her crownet weeds
Clamb'ring to hang,
an envious sliver broke,
When down her weedy
trophies and herself
Fell in the weeping brook.

Her clothes spread wide,
And mermaid-like
a while they bore her up;
Which time she chanted
snatches of old lauds,
As one incapable
of her own distress,
Or like a creature native
and indued unto that element.

But long it could not be
Till that her garments,
heavy with their drink,
Pulled the poor wretch
from her melodious lay
To muddy death.

Tom Traubert's Blues
(Four Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen)
Words and music: Tom Waits

Wasted and wounded,
it ain't what the moon did
I got what I paid for now
See ya tomorrow,
hey Frank can I borrow
A couple of bucks from you?

To go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll go a waltzing Matilda with me

I'm an innocent victim of a blinded alley
And I'm tired of all these soldiers here
No one speaks English and everything's broken
And my Stacy's are soaking wet
To go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll go a waltzing Matilda with me

Now the dogs are barking
and the taxi cab's parking
A lot they can do for me
I begged you to stab me,
you tore my shirt open
And I'm down on my knees tonight
Old Bushmill's I staggered,
you buried the dagger
Your silhouette window light
To go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll go a waltzing Matilda with me

Now I lost my Saint Christopher
now that I've kissed her
And the one-armed bandit knows
And the maverick Chinaman
and the cold-blooded signs
And the girls down by the strip-tease shows
Go, waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll go a waltzing Matilda with me

No, I don't want your sympathy
The fugitives say that the streets aren't for dreaming now
Manslaughter dragnets
and the ghosts that sell memories
They want a piece of the action anyhow
Go, waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll go a waltzing Matilda with me

And you can ask any sailor and the keys from the jailor
And the old men in wheelchairs know
That Matilda's the defendant, she killed about a hundred
And she follows wherever you may go
Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll go a waltzing Matilda with me

And it's a battered old suitcase to a hotel someplace
And a wound that will never heal
No primadonna, the perfume is on
An old shirt that is stained with blood and whiskey
And goodnight to the street sweepers
The night watchman
flame keepers
and goodnight to Matilda too.

I find it startling that both the =http://usinfo.state.gov/topic...Bush administration and the =http://www.msnbc.com/news/946...Vatican have chosen this time to launch a homophobic offensive while so much is going on in the Middle East. ...of course neither would have any interest in diverting the media from actual pressing issues like Americans dying abroad, innocents being killed in gunfire or child molestation...

I am still semi-blue from yesterday's poetry fest - among other things.

I know it is tedious but I think I will go googling for more internet quizzes.

Don't worry - I promise no Care Bear or Rainbow Bright quizzes. If Ican find a mon-chi-chi one watch out.

You know what I remember about =http://www.toyolink.com/monch...Mon-chi-chi's?

No more French poetry today.

Here's something a little sweeter.

The Rainbow Connection
by:Paul Williams
as sung by: =http://www.internoodle.com/ke...Kermit T. Frog

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
And rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we've been told and some choose to believe it
I know they're wrong, wait and see.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Who said that every wish would be heard and answered
when wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that
and someone believed it,
and look what it's done so far.
What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing?
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
the lovers, the dreamers and me.

All of us under its spell,
we know that it's probably magic....

Have you been half asleep
and have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same.
I've heard it too many times to ignore it.
It's something that I'm supposed to be.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
the lovers, the dreamers and me.
La, la la, La, la la la, La Laa, la la, La, La la laaaaaaa

Free stuff
07.30.03 (3:52 pm)
Erm, I don't have any free stuff. Actually, I want to talk about my favorite modern (tho dead) French poet, =http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki...Jacques Prevert. I just didn't think you would hit the link if I titled it =http://french.chass.utoronto....Favorite French Poet...

Here is one of his works,

=http://my.ort.org.il/givatram...PARIS AT NIGHT
( by Jacques Prévert )

Trois allumettes une à une allumées dans la nuit
La première pour voir ton visage tout entier
La seconde pour voir tes yeux
La dernière pour voir ta bouche
Et l'obscurité tout entière pour me rappeler tout cela
En te serrant dans mes bras

Here's a poem with a good English translation...
Jacques Prevert
Premier Jour
---
Des draps blancs dans une armoire
Des draps rouges dans un lit
Un enfant dans sa mere
Sa mere dans les douleurs
Le pere dans le couloir
Le couloir dans la maison
La maison dans la ville
La ville dans la nuit
La mort dans un cri
Et l'enfant dans la vie

White sheets in a closet
Red sheets in a bed
A child in it's mother
It's mother in pain
Father in the hall
The hall in the house
The house in the city
The city in the night
Death in a scream
And the child in life

and my favorite,
Dejeuner du Matin
Il a mis le cafe
Dans la tasse
Il a mis le lait
Dans la tasse de cafe
Il a mis le sucre
Dans le cafe au lait
Avec la petite cuiller
Il a tourne
Il a bu le cafe au lait
Et il a repose la tasse
Sans me parler
Il a allume
Une cigarette
Il a fait des ronds
Avec la fumee
Il a mis les cendres
Dans le cendrier
Sans me parler
Sans me regarder
Il s'est leve
Il a mis
Son chapeau sur sa tete
Il a mis
Son manteau de pluie
Parce qu'il pleuvait
Et il est parti
Sous la pluie
Sans une parole
Sans me regarder
Et moi j'ai pris
Ma tete dans ma main
Et j'ai pleure.

Translation,
He put the coffee
In the cup
He put the milk
In the cup of coffee
He put the sugar
In the cafe au lait
With the little spoon
He stirred
He drank the cafe au lait
And he sat down the cup
Without speaking to me
He lit
A cigarette
He blew rings
With the smoke
He put the ashes
In the ashtray
Without speaking to me
Without looking at me
He stood up
He put
His hat on his head
He put on
His raincoat
Because it was raining
And he left
In the rain
Without a word
Without looking at me
And I, I took
My head in my hands
And =http://www.apa.org/pubinfo/AA...cried.

Prevert's poems always read melancholic, even sad. When read aloud in the original French, they are more powerful than I could ever describe. There's just something about the French language that lends itself to expressing one's emotions both in language and pronunciation of the words themselves...

Merci mille fois, Jacques. Merci mille fois.

Job update
07.30.03 (1:52 pm)
Well, I've decided to talk to my archaeology contact a bit more and see just how frequent this work would be. The boyfriend told me to do whatever I wanted to do, he just wants me to be happy (someone's been watching Oprah again) and I really have no desire to temp at this moment - unless I get offered a really cushy job with few responsibilities and high pay. Think Jennifer from WKRP.

Potentially taking a step towards a career...

The Strange and Terrible Saga of Reservoir Kitty (AKA Muggles T. Cat)
07.30.03 (9:19 am)
Actually, there's nothing particularly strange about the saga and the only person who probably thought anything was terrible about it was me, but I wanted the =http://www.gonzo.org/Hunter Thompson reference in the title so...

In the beginning there was the new house. Boyfriend and I had been living in a 1 bedroom apartment while construction was underway and visited the site, every few days. 1 week before we were supposed to move in, we were skulking about the house and backyard looking for defects to complain to the contractor about.

That's when we heard it. The tiniest of meows coming from one corner of our backyard. We coulnd't even see her at first she was so tiny, but there she was, a wee kitten all alone and crying.

We went to several of the neighbors and asked if they had lost a cat. "No," they all replied. It was fate. I had been begging for a kitty since we had moved to Houston, and here one was left at my doorsteps, or backyard. Whatever.

Anyway, after a lot of me making puppy dog eyes at the boyfriend he agreed she was too little to leave alone and that she should come with us. One problem. We had ridden his Harley to the house. Muggles, I had already named her Muggles, had her first and only =http://www.motorcycle-memorie...motorcycle ride that day. She started out tucked nicely into my shirt and after about 10 miles and a million scratches on my chest, she ended up between my neck and shoulders enjoying the breeze 'til we got home.

I was in love. Boyfriend was in denial about being in love, but he was in love. Muggles thought I was her mama. I know this because she tried to nurse one night while I was asleep (my neck you freaks). I woke up to find her attached to my throat. Do you know how difficult a kitty hickey is to explain to people?

Moving day. Everything was being loaded into the new house. I was at work and Boyfriend's mom was taking care of the movers and what not. That's when it happened. That's when the =http://www.theexorcist.biz/evil little girl from down the road stopped by. Demon childe wanted to know if we (boyfriend's mama) had seen *her* cat. THE NERVE!!!!
Boyfriend's mama said no and sent demon childe on her way. (YAY BF's MAMA!)

Unfortunately, boyfriend has a conscience. When he found out later that day he made the decision to give the cat back.
Boyfriend calls me at work. "Drama," he says, "guess what we are going to get first thing?"

"What," I asked excitedly.

"A cat," he replied.

"I get another cat!?"

"Uhm well, uhm,..."

"WHAT'S HAPPENED TO MY CAT!?"

"...the owners came by we have to give her back."

I was crushed. Dumb ol' little girl... but the deal was done. Muggles went home. (Just so you know, BF called me at work so his cowardly butt didn't have to see me cry...)

Fast forward another week. Housewarming party. Boyfriend's mom was handling the preparations for that too while we worked. After a very, very long day, I finally made it home when the party was starting. Boyfriend's buddies had all brought beer. Boyfriend's coworkers had brought actual housewarming gifts. (Go figure.) Boyfriend's mom brought the most beautiful little =http://www.traditionalcats.co...doll-faced Persian kitten . (YAY!)

Since I had wanted a cat to name Muggles FOREVER I named her M2, we just call her Mugs or Muggles most of the time, with boyfriend throwing in the occasional "fat ass." My stepmother thinks it's weird and that she should have her own name, but it's really none of her business is it?

Muggles has been the perfect kitty from the start. She sleeps a lot, then goes absolutely apeshit, then goes back to sleep. I haven't had any kitty hickeys to explain but she does sleep right above my head every night. I don't know what I would do without her.

Thus ends the not so strange and terrible saga of Reservoir Kitty, for now anyway...

Dilemma
07.29.03 (1:26 pm)
A friend called and has offered some sporadic contract archaeology work.

This temp position ends on Friday.

I've spoken with two other temp agencies about work since Monday - they called me.
[LINE]
What should I do?

I went to school for years to do archaeology. I am not particularly fond of being gone for weeks at a time, but it's better than no job... I could also learn a lot from the employer. We were contemporaries at school but she is eons ahead of me...

Temping is great, if you have access to a computer, but the jobs I've been offered wouldn't allow that. They don't pay too well either... If I don't get a certain amount, I won't take the job. Period.

My significant other says take the temp jobs. My safe side says take the temp jobs. My bored self says go on the survey...

It's not like any of the above are going to offer benefits, so what difference does it make?

I'm torn.

Free advice
07.29.03 (8:49 am)
Gentlemen, let me be the first to say that if I woke up tomorrow and everyman on Earth had disappeared I would be, after the initial shock, forced into a life of emptiness and sorrow.

With that in mind, heed these words, NEVER, EVER, NO MATTER WHAT, accuse any woman, anywhere, at anytime of "putting something down the toilet." That is an accusation that will turn even the most devoted women into raging harpies. You wanna see the claws come out? Bring it on.

We are taught from roughly Junior High on, not to do this sort of thing. Every girl has had the lecture numerous times from teachers, coaches, mothers and school custodial staff. We DO NOT need you to tell us not to, or even ask if we did.

Here's a suggestion, if a plumbing problem arises, andthe first thing that pops into your head is, "she put something down the toilet," instead of directly confronting the female in question, query with, "the plumbing seems to be backed up, I wonder what the problem could be?" Try and look as innocent as possible when you do this, give her that look she gives you when you finally notice the new drapes or the scratch on your SUV. It will make your life much easier.

Thank you for your time.

TV Boyfriends
07.28.03 (12:48 pm)
Okay, I read an article once on TV boyfriends by a very talented writer by the name of "=http://www.teevee.org/archive...Lisa Schmeiser".

She defined a tv boyfriend, as, well, just that - they guy on tv you would most want to have as a boyfriend.

I have had several over my lifetime.

The earliest I can recall are =http://www.scoobysnack.net/in...Scooby Doo and =http://www.samruby.com/Peter Parker. Yes, cartoons, and one was a dog. I was very innocent back then and had no idea that perves would one day treat me as an outcast for my feelings.

Anyway, as I grew older my tastes in men changed. Soon my heart belonged to =http://www.dukefarm.com/image...Luke Duke. I still feel a little cheated that he didn't get to drive the =http://www.geocities.com/holl...General Lee more. At least he was the brains of the outfit.

After Luke, I didn't have a lot of tv boyfriends anymore, sure, there were brief affairs with Hardy Boy, =http://www.tvtome.com/images/...Parker Stevenson, =http://hem.passagen.se/daniel...Michael J. Fox, and =http://www.classicmoviekids.c...Fred Savage, but these were mere flings. No intensity. I didn't even mind when little Freddy finally got some action in the last episode of the Wonder Years. I may never forgive Parker Stevenson for =http://att.eonline.com/News/I...,1,2417,00.htmlhooking up with Kirstie Allie in real life though. It just so wrong, and on so many levels...

I digress, skip forward a few years, cable television finally reaches small town, America where I was living and introduce the HBO Original Series, =http://www.hbo.com/oz/OZ.

OMG.

Over the course of the show I found myself in a long term relationship with =http://www.hbo.com/oz/cast/ch...this man, Robert Clohessy. Yeah, I know, you've never heard of him before. Who cares? He was kind of big and dumb and wore a prison guard uniform. That's all I really cared about. Sure there was eye candy galore on the show, but none of them walked with that little swagger of Clohessy's or affected the same Brooklyn accent. ::sigh::

It's over between us now. OZ ran its course and I find myself channel surfing and eating Haagen Daz to ease the pain. Perhaps, my Movie boyfriend, =http://multimedia.bitofearth....Sean Astin, or my Rock Star boyfriend, =http://www.americanpopularcul...Bono, can cheer me up.

If not, I will just have to wait for that special someone to light up the screen again...

Friends of Dorothy
07.28.03 (9:51 am)
Okay, not that Dorothy, another Dorothy...

=http://users.rcn.com/lyndanyc...Dorothy Parker to be exact. She was a bitch, a feminist, and a brilliant writer. Parker and her =http://www.rambles.net/parker...vicious little circle (aka the =http://www.dorothyparkernyc.c...Algonquin Round Table) were the toast of New York and literary critics everywhere in the '20's and 30's.

Dorothy wrote for classic magazines =http://www.newyorker.com/The New Yorker and =http://www.subscriberdirect.c...Vanity Fair and is responsible for classic lines, such as, ""You can't teach an old dogma new tricks," and "I don't care what is written about me so long as it isn't true."

I can only =http://portraits.npg.si.edu/i...imagine what the nights were like at the Algonquin. In my minds eye I see a smoky room filled with the some of the most gifted authors of the 20th century each trying to outsting one another with their wit. Cigars and wine glasses litter the table as waiters race to satisfy their every whim, all the while Ms. Parker lording over them queenlike in her station...

I think Dorothy Parker said that. She said almost everything worth repeating.

Red-Headed Woman!
by: Springsteen
Well, brunettes are fine, man.
Blondes are fun.
But, when it comes to getting the dirty job done,
I'll take a red-headed woman, a red-headed woman.
Yeah, a red-headed woman sure can get that job done.

Well, listen up, sir,
Your life's been wasted
Until you've been down on your knees,
Oh, man, tasted a red-headed woman, a red-headed woman.
Yeah, a red-headed woman sure gets a dirty job done.

Eh ha ha woo hoo woo.
ee ee ah ee ah ha ea ha ha woo woo (etc.)

Yeah, little tight skirt, strawberry hair.
Tell me what you've got, baby, waiting under there.
Big green eyes that look like sun
They can see every cheap thing that you ever done

Well, I don't care how many girls you dated.
Man, you ain't lived
Till you've had your tires rotated
By a red-headed woman, a red-headed woman.
A red-headed woman sure can get the job done.

Well, all you girls out there tonight sure look fine,
But my heart and soul and this body of mine
Is a red-headed woman's, a red-headed woman's.
Yeah, a red-headed woman sure gets a dirty job done.

Eh ha ha woo hoo woo.
ee ee ah ee ah ha ea ha ha woo woo

JAPAN! Must... See...

I tell ya.

I love to travel.

Europe, Canada, Mexico, the U.S. - all great places, but *I MUST GO TO JAPAN!*

Why?

It's the stuff dreams are made of!

The Japanese seem to =http://nausicaa.homeip.net/ga...embrace =http://www1.cs.columbia.edu/~sedwards/photos/crazyjap an200207/pop culture with a =http://www.so-net.ne.jp/CYBER...gusto lacking elsewhere. (Not to mention their incredible talents at =http://www.pages2send.com/jap...entrepreneurship.)

They brought us =http://members.aol.com/sanrio...Hello Kitty, =http://www.playland.ns.ca/ima...that little frog thing, =http://www.cartoonparty.net/b...anime and =http://www.geocities.com/mami...Ringu! (I am still disappointed to learn that it's a"concept show and that the =http://www.cnn.com/2000/FOOD/...Japanese Liberace guy is just an actor playing a role...)

What I ask???

...and am I to ignore, =http://www.dinosaur-museum.or...Godzilla, =http://www.surfnetkids.com/po...pokemon, =http://www.absoluteanime.com/...G-Force and the like? I think not!

Sing, sing a song...

Everytime I think of that phrase I see Fez from that 70's Show at his =http://www.that70sshow.com/ep...Spring Sing...
[LINE]
I've been noticing little blog trends since I've begun this. My favorites are the little Mood/Song indicators at the end of blogs.

Not going to do it, but I like it.

Just to waste some of my valuable time though, I thought I might occasionally list some of my favorite songs.

One's on my mind today are,
1.) =http://www.bobdylan.com/songs...Just Like A Woman - Bob Dylan
2.) =http://www.plyrics.com/lyrics...London Calling - The Clash
3.) =http://www.azlyrics.com/lyric...White Wedding - Billy Idol (cause when I think of the Clash I always think of Idol too...)
4.) =http://www.reallyrics.com/lyr...Merry Christmas from the Family - Robert Earl Keen

and

last but not least,
5.) Blue Heaven
the Pogues

Alligators snap at your ankles
And branches snap at your brain
If I ever get through this swamp alive
I'll nevermore pray for rain

This must be the place, and still
Somehow it don't seem right
That something in the moon
Could change these endless days
To lonely nights

I take a stroll down by the sea
And walk along the pier
Then I slip and hit my head
Now's the time to fear

See the surface, see the rocks
See my past fly swiftly by
I feel the water in my lungs
And wake up screaming for my life

In my blue heaven
There's a bottle of Pontchetrain
Chalmette by moonlight
To take away the pain

Card sharks and blue harps
And dolphins who can leap
In my Blue Heaven
Where I can laugh
And I can weep

Black shapes zip into corners
The big lads start to crawl
To holes of their own making
In the cracks within the wall

Snakes and rats and spiders
I know that they're still there
I pray to God that I may sleep
Without a hope, without a care

In my blue heaven
There's a bottle of Pontchetrain
Chalmette by moonlight
To take away the pain

Felines and sea lions
And rain on the beach
In my Blue Heaven
With angels who are out of reach

In my blue heaven
There's a bottle of Pontchetrain
Chalmette by moonlight
To take away the pain

Nightingales sing
And the bells they will ring
In my Blue Heaven
The Bells of Hell
Go ding-a-ling-a-ling

Whatever happened to Molly Ringwald?
07.24.03 (10:46 am)
I haven't liked many actresses in the past. I'm not sure =http://www.imdb.com/Name?Grif...,%20Melaniewhy.

Yeah, sure there are a few classic ladies out there like =http://www.audreyhepburn.com/...Audrey Hepburn and =http://www.geocities.com/Holl...Maureen O'Hara, whose =http://www.filmsite.org/quie....movies I would rent just for their =http://www.ozcraft.com/scifid...prescence.

But =http://www.imdb.com/Name?Ande...,+Pamelaactresses =http://www.imdb.com/Name?Zeta...,+Catherinepopular since =http://www.superseventies.com...my birth?

=http://www.mollyringwald.net/...Ringwald has always been a favorite, but then I am partial to redheads. Otherwise the 80's and 90's were kind of dry for my appreciation of female stars.

Recently, however I've come to enjoy quite a few female performers. =http://www.teamnicole.com/Nicole Kidman's =http://www.apple.com/trailers...choice of =http://www.clubmoulinrouge.co...movies has been good as has =http://www.hallewood.com/Halle Barry's. =http://film.guardian.co.uk/ga...,8544,858218,00.htmlLiv Tyler and Cate Blanchett both have picked choice films to display their talent as have =http://www.drewsmiles.com/Drew Barrymore and =http://www.parkerposey.org/Parker Posey. For a second there I thought =http://www.ariafritta.it/imag...Angelina Jolie was going to be on my list for =http://www.pestidiva.hu/img/g...Gia, but she has made some dreadful appearances since then. (=http://www.student.uni-augsbu...~holzmage/angtr.jpgLaura Croft?)

As for TV actresses I like =http://lavender.fortunecity.c...Mila Kunis (yeah, Jackie) from that 70's show and from =http://www.hbo.com/sixfeetund...Six Feet Under =http://members.aol.com/CantHW...Lauren Ambrose. =http://lili.net/Lili Taylor is good too - and she's in =http://www.metalasylum.com/ra...movies and tv...

Don't get me wrong, I don't expect Mila, Liv or Drew to take home any =http://www.driko.org/smallpic...best actress =http://www.smh.com.au/ffxImag...awards soon. I just enjoy their work.

Come on Hollywood and New York, Less Julia, Reese and JLo and more of these ladies.

You're Audrey Hepburn...and classy is your middle
name. You're an angel and you never think about
yourself but what you can do for
others...loverly!

Last night I turned on =http://www.triotv.com/Trio and watched "=http://www.etonline.com/celeb...Battle of the Network Stars, '78". Okay, yeah, =http://www.wildwildwest.org/n...Robert Conrad's vignette with the young boys is creepy in retrospect. Those were simpler times.

Why did they stop doing those? Now *that* was reality television.

When I was a kid I used to set up an obstacle course in the house and run it everytime Battle of the Network Stars aired. It drove my parents nuts! I busted my ass jumping over the ottoman onto the love seat once and broke at least one dinette chair in my disply of athletics.

Who needs =http://www.family.org/pplace/...Jackass? BotNS probably caused way more kids to injure themselves back in the 70's and no one cared! We didn't have to wear helmets when we rode our bikes, forget seatbelts and Home Alone wasn't a movie - it was what we latch-key kids were everyday.

::sigh::
Good Times.

Grandma
07.15.03 (3:54 pm)
I've been thinking about my grandma.

I think about her a lot.
We lost her this Winter.

She had been in a nursing home for going on 3 years. 3 fairly traumatic years for her and my family.

My dad and I found her when she had her stroke, the day after Christmas, her 90th birthday. I had gone over to get her, the family was coming to our house for a birthday lunch. Things just didn't go as planned...

The ambulance came, we all went to the hospital, she didn't recognize me, my cousin tried to grab her wedding ring... Everything was wrong, but grandma pulled through.

She spent the rest of her life in and out of hospitals, fighting infections, depression, and death.

She loved me like I was her own child, and really, I was. She raised me, clothed me, paid for my education, and guided my way through a difficult youth. Everyone should be so lucky to have someone in their lives that is so selfless and full of love.

I was at my other grandmother's home when I got the news of granny's passing. I call my other grandmother by her first name. When I talk to the family about my grandmother, they know who I am referring to...

Like I said, I was at my other grandmother's house when I got the news. Dad called. He was very calm. He said 'we lost *mother* tonight," I crumbled. The news devastated me, dad's reaction devastated me - he called her "mother". Always when he talked to me he called her granny, always...

I feel fortunate for having been able to spend much of December with her. She couldn't communicate well, but she did know me. Our favorite thing to do was for me to get the family Bible and read to her. I can't remember the last time I had read the Bible...

Sometimes now, when I wake up I think about her and have to remember that she is gone. She is so much a part of me it is hard to believe.

I love you grandma.

It's =http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/HAW2/...Hurricane season here on the =http://www.chem.uh.edu/facult...Gulf and I am bracing myself for my, "=http://www.ardalohanlon.co.uk...first time."

ATTENTION!
07.14.03 (12:08 pm)
Yes, I just bought an 1991 =http://www.tndirectory.com/ki...Ford Explorer, with well over 150,000 miles on it.

Why?

1.)I am =http://www.amazon.com/exec/ob...poor.

2.)I wrecked the =http://www.fordvehicles.com/c...MUSTANG my father gave me as a graduation gift.

3.)I have absolutely =http://www.earthliberationfro...no concern whatsoever for the environment or future generations.

Okay, so maybe 3 is a bit exaggerated. It's just that no sooner did I buy the damn thing did I watch one of those tv-zines that trashed folks who bought SUV's. They had a, I kid you not, car psychologist on, pontificating about all the reasons people want to buy the =http://www.evilsite.org/evil/...%20Utility%20Vehicles/EVIL SUV! =http://www.helpself.com/freud...Penis envy, =http://www.ioa.com/~shermis/socjus/socdar.htmlsurvival of the fittest and the fact that they just look so darn =http://www.landrover.com/us/e...cool were mentioned. Then the report proceeded to scold everyone who had bought one saying they could not =http://www.liarsliarsliars.co...justify their positions. In other words there is =http://www.truckworld.com/Tra...NO excuse for owning an SUV.

Okay. Not that I feel I have to justify my position but some of us do actually use the features they carry. This is a second car for our household. Admittedly, I will be using it to get to a =http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/Group...park and ride station. I =http://www.car-accidents.com/...wreck cars, the bus is a much better option for me. However, the B/F has a =http://www.tnugent.com/hunting lease (=http://www.peta.org/PETA folks please leave hate mail below) that requires a four wheel drive to get in and out of. He is also a=http://www.incrediblehulk.com... large (not fat) guy - he couldn't even sit in the passenger seat of the Mustang no less drive it. Uhm and it was really inexpensive to be in such good condition... That might be a selfish reason for driving this behemouth, but not as selfish as the one reason I really think is neat - I get to sit up REALLY HIGH.

...maybe I will be able to see things better and not hit them now...

It's happened to all of us.

You're sitting at the movies waiting for the show to start. the =http://www.yip.org/crybaby.ht...baby begins to cry. It cries through the opening trailers, it cries through the, "shhhhh, be considerate of others," warning, it cries through the opening credits and the rest of the movie.

#1.) IF YOU CAN'T FIND A =http://www.maxpages.com/folkl...BABYSITTER, STAY HOME!

#2.) ACCEPT THE =http://www.plannedparenthood....RESPONSIBILITY YOU CHOSE WHEN YOU HAD A BABY! I DO NOT CARE WHETHER OR NOT THE CHILD WAS =http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/n...PLANNED, I DO NOT CARE IF YOU ARE A =http://www.singleparents.org/...SINGLE PARENT. IF THE MOVIE DOESN'T HAVE =http://www.sesameworkshop.org...ELMO, BIG BIRD, or the words, =http://www.animaart.com/disne...WALT DISNEY PRESENTS, THEY DO NOT NEED TO BE THERE!

It's not as if =http://www.thehulk.com/index_...THE HULK was the =http://www.misfit.org/views/2...easiest movie to sit through in the first place, but the distractions made it unbearable! I thought my boyfriend was going to turn green and smash up the place...

#3.) IF YOUR CHILD CAN'T GRASP THE PHRASE, ""BE QUIET," THEN THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE MOVIE AND HAVE NO BUSINESS BEING THERE. Don't be selfish, stay at home, rent them Barney in the Big Blue House (whatever) and yourself a copy of =http://www.brmovie.com/Bladerunner. That's what VCR's are for.

You will be much more =http://www.angelfire.com/cele...popular if you do. I promise.

The only movies I was taken to as a child were children's movies. I distinctly remember sitting through =http://www.geocities.com/anni...Annie and =http://www.songofthesouth.net...the Song of the South with my mother. That's it. Those were the only two I saw before I was old enough to sit down, shut up and go to the movies by myself.

Not too long ago a movie theatre decided to take things into their own hands. No kids AT ALL allowed in r-rated movies. No matter if there parents were with them or not. Guess what? Yep, the parents protested. To borrow an adjective learned from the internet, ASSHATS! All of them. Wish I could provide a link on that little story...

Do you know how hard it is to work at a job you know you are going to lose in a few weeks?

No one is giving me any projects to work on, the only time I answer the phones is when the receptionist is out and I can't get into my bloody delphi forums.

i could be at home organizing my bathroom or cleaning out the study - I wouldn't be getting paid for that of course. Still, I'm at the point today where I want to just push my chair back from the table, and start banging my head on it. Start a nice little 4/4 rythym.

Well it's more or less official.

My temp job ends in about 2 weeks.

I hope I find another fast. Other than that, I'm not complaining. I'll just be able to blog and visit the delphi forums more.

The HR person is in my bosses office. I have a sneaky suspicion they have found a full-timer for my temp position.

This sucks. I hate not having a job - money good. No money - bad.

It's not that I'm overly fond of this position, I've just gotten used to the routine. Wake-up, bus, work:play on computer/lunch/work:play on computer/bus/home.

I am not going to worry about this though. There are always other temp jobs.

Failure is a state of mind.
07.08.03 (8:45 am)
Here is something you might not know about me. I have my MA in =http://webs.wichita.edu/anthr...Anthropology.

Why then, am I working temp jobs to pay the bills? Why am I not =http://www.myprofessorsucks.c...teaching at a University, =http://webits3.appstate.edu/a...Preparing for a PhD or out being a =http://home.earthlink.net/~knoxbrandon/shovelbums/shovelbum somewhere =http://www.locogringo.com/res...exotic? I'll tell you why. The latter doesn't pay the bills and the former isn't to my liking. Been there, done that.

Perhaps, I would feel differently if I was more sure of myself, my qualifications, I don't know.

A friend wrote me a letter when I was agonizing over whether or not to change career paths. She (an artist) said she knew how it felt for life not to work out the way you had planned it and that I was not the only one struggling with this sort of decision. She's had to compromise. Instead of being a free spirit doing her art in some =http://www.burningman.com/collective out in the desert, she teaches art to Jr. high kids and is well on her way to being a =http://www.grimmy.com/images/...soccer mom. ...and you know what? She's happy.

I need to find that. I need to find my place. I will have only failed if I give up on myself.

What do you do when you're sitting in a room and people start to =http://www.out.com/OUT family members?

My grandma's current fling's family was hanging out with us over the weekend. Things were going well, old and young sat together chatting about =http://flag.blackened.net/din...Life the Universe and Everything when, all of a sudden, they start in on old Uncle So&So.
They talked about his beautiful cars and how nice he dressed etc., then out of the blue one of the older men says, "I think he mighta been a little =http://www.queernation.com/queer too."

(Now - what the hell is a =http://www.lunamorena.net/jou...little queer?)

I digress, immediately some of the women try and get the conversation back on course.

One says, "he was *=http://www.officialvillagepeo...%2054%20page/pages/DSC_00 59.htmin the Navy*." (I start to snicker as the intros to numerous Village People songs start chiming in my head.)
Another pipes in with, "his =http://www.cmstory.org/ww2/vo...mother was so protective, went to every port with him." (I unabashedly laugh out loud.)
Ignoring me, someone else says, "he was with that one =http://members.bellatlantic.n...~vze2rnyj/dad/pages/078_D oris_Rock_Hudson.Jpg.htmlgirl for 8 or 9 years but they never got =http://members.aol.com/beardg...married." (Tears were rolling down my face.)

I don't think I made a great impression on these people.
Que sara sara.

This little episode rates right up there with the time my stepmother kept trying to tell me how, that if my female cousin Rocky (name changed to protect the innocent), would just put on a little make-up and grow her =http://home.fuse.net/jlleach/...hair out, she would be able to find a man.
This from the same woman whose niece has bought a house with another woman, adopted a child, "and is seeing the nicest man, her mother says."

=http://www.geocities.com/~cyberanto/disco/comingou t.htmlWAKE UP!

My favorite of all time though was how an old redneck delicately tried to explain to me that my Uncle wasn't, "that way," he "just wasn't interested in girls."

No, he wasn't interested in girls. He liked MEN. He was 6'2, in the =http://www.army.mil/Army, an =http://meadows.smu.edu/defaul...SMU graduate, and he liked =http://www.mensfitness.com/me...MEN!

...and becasue he liked men, he felt he couldn't live in the small town he grew up in surrounded by his family. Instead, he moved half way across the country, and kept his life a secret from us.

Well, perhaps it was just me but I felt really angry about the choice he felt he was forced to make. Only seeing him on the occasional holiday, he felt more like an intruder than part of the family.

Finally, when I was old enough to figure out what was going on, he did move back home. A month later he died of a heart condition - no one knew he was hiding that either.

Only after his death did I find out how much I had been cheated. He was one of the few in our family to go on to Higher Education. He spoke a dozen Chinese dialects and was a translator for the Army in the 1950's. In the '60's he trvelled the world with a chorale group. He visited places Americans aren't even allowed into today - he was a fount of knowledge I never had access to and why? Because he was different.

My only wish is that he led one hell of a life away from us. I hope his world was filled with friendships, love, kindness, and most of all acceptance. I wish I could know for sure, I wish he could have trusted me with that but I will never know, so I choose to believe.

Long Weekend
07.03.03 (9:42 am)
It's only a half day at work for me today and then I'm =http://www.wintertexans.com/h...off to the =http://www.sanantoniocvb.com/...Hill =http://www.texasantiqueshows....Country.

I know, you're envious. What can I say? Life is working out for me afterall.

I'll be spending some time with relatives, we're a properly =http://www.geocities.com/TheT...dysfunctional family somewhat =http://www.garlicnews.com/lay...estranged from one another here and there. I am happy to report that the estrangements are for all the right reasons. Darlings, if you never listen to another word I say heed this warning. Forgiving is easy and should be done with all your heart and all your soul, but never let the bastards do it to you again, in other words, don't forget. You're just continuing an ugly cycle.

I digress, the Hill Country; =http://www.meyerbedandbreakfa...quaint, laid back, and home of some of the biggest characters you'll ever meet. There are everything from saddle tramps to millionaires out there. I personally know of an old woman rich enough to buy half of =http://www.vsbw.com/~terry/houston.jpgHouston and she still sleeps outside on the porch every night until it gets too cold and bathes in the river. Tough old broad, but you would never know it to meet her in a social setting. She's the consumate Texas deb. in public.

If you ever get a chance head that way. Just follow the Bluebonnets. Stop in Fredericksburgh for some =http://www.fredericksburgherb...food and =http://valentinerealtyin c.com...shopping, go to =http://www.luckenbachtexas.co...Luckhenbach just so you can say you've been there and enjoy the little towns in-between. I recommend any and all of the roadside fruit and vegetable stands - if it's a pepper it's hot and if it's in a jar and labeled =http://www.mamasaidspecialtie...chow-chow, buy it. You won't be sorry.

Last but not least, if by some strange chance you drive by a run down roadhouse called =http://www.fortmckavett.com/Pete's, go in, don't be afraid, pet the dog, and have a beer. It's one of a kind Pete's - and if you're lucky, maybe he'll show you his dental molds and archaic point collection.

ONE of those FACES
07.01.03 (9:46 am)
I guess I just have one of those faces.

I'm not beautiful by any stretch of the imagination. I would describe myself as ordinary. My face is more or less symmetrical and my weight is proportionate to my height. The only features I have that really stand out are my =http://www.geocities.com/Suns...red hair, height, and skin, remember that song, =http://www.dnafiles.net/dna/l...Whiter Shade of Pale?

The thing is, that for some reason, this makes me a =http://web.raex.com/~obsidian/scaindex.htmlfreak magnet.

The first real memory I have of such an incident was in =http://www.durantisd.org/dhs/...High School. One boring afternoon I was trolling around the local bookstore and some man walks up to me and says, "I am writing a fantasy novel and you would be the perfect model for my =http://www.clipartguide.com/c...female warrior." Okay, I might have been a kid, but this raised a caution flag... Now the guy, well, how can I put it? The guy just looked like he walked out of =http://www.tourpikecounty.com...%20logo.jpgDeliverance and spent lots of time playing =http://www.ahs.albany.k12.ny....Dungeons and Dragons all alone in a basement. Clearly *not* someone you go back home with and let render you in crayola.

I bring this up because I relived this horror once again on my way to work today. It started out to be a perfectly normal day. A coworker and myself got off the bus and headed for our building. Just like any other day she stopped at Starbuck's for a coffee and I kept walking. That's when it happened. That's when the guy at the bustop who had stared at me the day before stopped me. He had that desperate look a nerd gets when looking at the Chess club queen, "You look like soneone I know," he said. "I'm an artist..."

Aaaaaaahhhhhhh!

"I don't care if you are," I wanted to scream! You are acting inappropriately!
(At least I am clearly of age this time.) Ack.

An announcement;
To all whom this might concern - do not approach young women on the street and say, "I am an"agent," "artist," "photographer," etc.," without an article written about you from the MoMA in hand.

It's creepy, *trust* me.
