†Opheliaâ€
There is a willow grows
ascaunt the brook,
That shows his hoar
leaves in the glassy stream.
Therewith fantastic garlands
did she make
Of crow-flowers, nettles,
daisies, and long purples,
That liberal shepherds give
a grosser name,
But our cold maids
do dead men's fingers call them.
There on the pendant
boughs her crownet weeds
Clamb'ring to hang,
an envious sliver broke,
When down her weedy
trophies and herself
Fell in the weeping brook.
Her clothes spread wide,
And mermaid-like
a while they bore her up;
Which time she chanted
snatches of old lauds,
As one incapable
of her own distress,
Or like a creature native
and indued unto that element.
But long it could not be
Till that her garments,
heavy with their drink,
Pulled the poor wretch
from her melodious lay
To muddy death.

My first Thanksgiving without my grandma.
I can't remember a time when I wasn't at least in phone contact with my grandmother on Thanksgiving. Most of the time I was at her house with all my aunts and uncles and cousins running through the buffet line after anxiously waiting through the family prayer.
Grandma made the best potato salad ever. None can compare. I begged for the recipe but it was never written down, she just did it from memory - a dash of this and a pinch of that. ...and her sausage balls... have I mentioned them? Or her pecan pies - the ones made with the pecans from the trees in her yard? The ones she picked herself? Undoubtedly unique and unmatchable.
I remember the first holiday prayer after my father's oldest brother died, she couldn't make it through without crying. "You should never have to outlive your children." All we could do was hold her hands while our hearts broke.
My grandmother was at times mother, father and friend to me. She had all the answers. She was my safe place. I could always go to grandma. Now that she is gone I still speak with her every evening in a prayer, I see her in other people's actions and hear her in their words. Sometimes, I must admit, I judge people according to her as well - I don't think she would have liked that very much.
What do you do when the person who single handedly molded your life leaves you? You can honor their memory and reflect on the good times but what about when you want some of their home cooking, or advice, or just a simple touch?
Rest in peace Grandma. I love you.

KABUL, Afghanistan (Nov. 27) - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton promised Thursday that America will stand with Afghanistan as it tries to rebuild after a quarter-century of conflict and warned Taliban rebels that they "are fighting a losing battle." Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton greets a U.S. soldier at Bagram Airbase north of Kabul, Afghanistan. But the New York Democrat also said more troops are needed in the multinational military coalition providing security. She told The Associated Press it was for others to decide whether those troops should come from the United States or other countries. The former first lady, who was in Afghanistan along with Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., on a whistlestop tour to spend Thanksgiving with U.S. troops, said the United States is determined to support Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
"I am very impressed by the resolve of the Afghan government, President Karzai in particular," Clinton said after a meeting with Karzai at the presidential palace.
She spoke in a room at the palace still pocked by decades of conflict. Two windows behind Clinton had bullet holes in them. Clinton said Washington is concerned about recent attacks, especially in the south and east of the country, by Taliban and al-Qaida fighters against aid workers, Afghan government employees and soldiers.
More than a dozen aid workers have been killed this year, most recently a 29-year-old French woman working with the U.N. refugee agency who was gunned down in broad daylight earlier this month south of the capital. The killing led the United Nations and several aid agencies to pull international staffers out of large swaths of the country.
"The U.S. is resolved to stand as a strong partner and to ensure that the terrorists, whoever they are, wherever they come from, will be dealt with," Clinton said. "The message should be: The Taliban terrorists are fighting a losing battle."
Clinton and Reed, who once served as a U.S. Army paratrooper, later sat down for a dinner of turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie with about 50 American soldiers at Bagram Air Base, just north of the capital.
"I also want to convey to them that the American people are fully behind them as they carry out a very difficult task," Clinton said.
Afterward, Clinton said in the AP interview that more troops are needed to defeat insurgents and to provide the security needed for Afghans to rebuild.
Taliban and al-Qaida forces are trying "to wear down our staying power," she said. "I believe we need more troops to be able to provide that security."
Clinton said she couldn't say whether additional forces should be drawn from the U.S. military, NATO nations or the armed forces of other countries.
Clinton met with soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division, which is based at Fort Drum in northern New York.
"I have a lot of respect for her as a woman," said Staff Sgt. Tamecha Moore, 31, from Hempstead, N.Y. "I hope she runs for president."
Clinton has said she has no intention to run for president in the 2004 election.
The two senators, who have criticized the Bush administration's handling of post-war operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, were later traveling to Iraq. Making his second visits to Afghanistan and Iraq, Reed said he wanted to hear from troops about how their missions are going.
Bagram Air Base, just north of Kabul, is home to most of the 11,600 coalition soldiers in Afghanistan. An additional 5,500 peacekeepers patrol the capital.
On Nov. 7, American and Afghan soldiers launched a special anti-terrorism operation in two eastern provinces of snow-covered mountains bordering Pakistan: Nuristan and Kunar.
On Sunday a U.S. transport helicopter crashed just after leaving Bagram in support of the operation, killing five U.S. servicemen and injuring eight. The cause of the crash is being investigated, but the Pentagon said the MH-53's engine may have failed.
Some 35 Americans have died from hostile fire in Afghanistan since the October 2001 start of the Afghan war, according to the U.S. military.
Karzai's government has taken important steps toward adopting a new constitution and holding elections in war-torn Afghanistan.
But Karzai and the coalition forces have been criticized for failing to reign in warlords, and for allowing cultivation of poppies - the source of heroin - to boom.
In another development Thursday, Zalmay Khalilzad, an Afghan-American, arrived in Kabul to assume his position as the new U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan.
Khalilzad, an ethnic Pashtun who previously served as President Bush's special envoy to Afghanistan, succeeds Robert Finn, who was the first U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan in more than 20 years.

Read this =http://www.thesmokinggun.com/...Real World @ Smoking Gun.
Now, it was only a matter of time wasn't it?
The first couple of seasons of Real World were pretty good. Season 1 was excellent. The housemates didn't know the rules of the game - they invented it. Ever since that first show a generation of young people have used the Real World as a template to live their lives, make their fortunes and tune out of actual reality. Puck was the first reality whore. Seriously, those before him were amateurs...
I digress, if the young woman was raped I have a hard time believing that there were not witnesses on the MTV crew. Why would she lie - yeah, everyone will scream about the money involved, but why be, "that girl who was raped" on the Real World for the rest of your life?
Was she just a bimbo who got caught in a one nighter on the show and wants to hide now? People will forget about that - my god, look at the whole Las Vegas season - bimbodom has its poster children.
What is the moral to this blog? I don't really have one I guess. Just don't go home with reality tv stars, their friends or anyone involved their production. Chances are that your best interests are not their main concern. ...oh, same works for athletes, rock stars, actors and or 19th century poets...

I just wish I could have a normal dream!!!
Last night's featured part of the cast from WKRP in Cincinnati.
Venus Flytrap - on all his silvery finery, bolero jacket and hat sat on one side of the restaurant. I had a feeling I should invite him to sit with me. Andy Travis then walked in, hugged me and sat down at my table. When he saw Venus he freaked and tried to "hide" our table from him. I was perplexed and Venus just stared at us like we were crazy white folk.
Then I woke up.

My grandmother can’t hear. When she was a child she took special diction classes for many years so I suspect this has been a life long issue with her. How unfortunate.
IT DRIVES ME NUTS!
Do you know what it’s like to have someone completely take their eyes off the road while driving and try to read your lips while you are talking? I try and stay quiet but the woman insists on small talk. I never thought that I would go out that way, not until yesterday anyway.
This woman also likes to go the speed limit or slower which seems to be a crime in this part of Hill country. Half the time we are driving on the shoulder so people can pass us. What I want to know is where are they going? It’s a 30 minute drive to anywhere in this place and every town is the same. Mexican food restaurant, feed store, exorbitantly priced dress shop, and MEGALO*GAS*STATIONS.
Really the only reason to speed is to heighten your chances of hitting wildlife. Porcupines, deer, raccoons, armadillos and various and sundry housepets. Guess what – live or die, the Deer usually wins – and have you seen what a porcupine can do to a tire – or a horse for that matter.
You wanna know what’s really crazy? I love it here. The frenzy of Houston is all but forgotten and people are just people. No putting on of airs here. Heck, I didn’t even know I was meeting one of Christopher Reeves cousin until after we bought the gun at the shop he was in – of course there was all the antler art to take our minds off such lofty matters. (Yeah, I played the degrees of separation game when I found out. I figure I am just about 1 degree of separation from everybody on the planet now.)
Oh, , everyone also knows everyone else’s business and lineage around here. You know, that’s old so and so his mama was what’s her name and she married a so and so and they had six so and so’s and lost two to the fever in ’43…
All in all it’s been a pretty good holiday getaway. Soon we’ll head for Oklahoma and to a whole other world and different set of relatives. Subtle the differences may be (thank you Master Yoda) but different all the same.
Namaste.

Only having one television station severely limits one’s viewing options. This morning I found myself watching the Morning Show or Good Morning America, whichever’s on CBS with Julie Chen and Renee Syler. Anyway, they spotlighted this little kid who wants to run for president in 2030 something or another. The kid was bright. No doubt about it. …but wouldn’t it bother you if your child could quote, word, for word, Clinton’s, “ I did not have sex with that woman Monica Lewinsky,” speech? He’s only 6 fer chrissakes! Note too that the child had a signed autograph of Rush Limbaugh (oxycontin anyone?) and thought the way to deal with folks like Saddam was to bomb them?
I know what you’re thinking – so what’s the difference between the kid and Dubya?
Not much at this point, though the kid says he’s an Independent and not a Democrat or Republican. Oh, and he has the potential to mature, change and hopefully rebel against his parents. Maybe he’ll become a Green Party Guru or even a Social Democrat!

Liv Tyler's a Big Fat Pig!
11.16.03 (3:55 pm)
=http://www.washingtonpost.com...whatever Liv Weighs In
"The Lord of the Rings" star Liv Tyler is paying no mind to the Hollywood suits who want her to shed poundage, according to the Internet Movie Database. The 26-year-old daughter of rocker Steven Tyler says she has been told by movie bosses that she risks losing top film roles unless she reduces the size of her God-given bod. But Liv, who trimmed to a svelte 125 pounds for her part as heroine Arwen in the "Lord of The Rings" trilogy, then piled 28 pounds right back on after shooting wrapped. She insists she's happy with her weight and doesn't want to diet. She says, "I've been told that if I lose weight I'd have more work, but . . . to the rest of the world I am slim and I like the way I am." Bless you.

TO -- (1830) by Edgar Allan Poe
The bowers whereat, in dreams, I see The wantonest singing birds, Are lips–and all thy melody Of lip-begotten words-
Thine eyes, in Heaven of heart enshrined, Then desolately fall, O God! on my funereal mind Like starlight on a pall-
Thy heart–thy heart!–I wake and sigh, And sleep to dream till day Of the truth that gold can never buy- Of the baubles that it may.

What is Leaverite?
11.14.03 (12:20 pm)
=http://members.aol.com/fostra...Leaverite - What to Do with It New rockhounds soon learn what Leaverite is. It's any unidentified mineral which, when you pick it up and ask a veteran collector whether you should keep it, the reply is, "No, leaverite there."
Of course some mysterious force often prompts collectors to take leaverite home anyway, and the question then becomes what to do with it. Below are a number of suggestions attributed to "Chip & Lick", the Roadrunner (who or whatever that is), via RRC Newsletter, 9/98, reprinted in the December 1989 Paleo Newsletter, Austin Paleontology Society
Ten Ways to Get Rid of Leaverites 1. Fix the chuck holes in your driveway 2. Throw them at bill collectors or door-to-door salesmen. 3. Take them to club displays and leave them. 4. Donate them to grab bags. 5. Slip them into your competitor's case when nobody is looking. 6. Throw them over the fence into your neighbor's garden. 7. Fix a large label..."This material insured by Pinkerton's" and leave them unwatched at the shopping mall. 8. Fill up your car trunk to get you through the winter ice. 9. Best of all, don't take them home in the first place!
I wish I could call this my own - but I can only find the link and attribute it to anonymous. *Note, Leaverite is commonly found in Fugawiland - as in where the Fug-a-wi?

Dreamland by Lewis Carroll When midnight mists are creeping, And all the land is sleeping, Around me tread the mighty dead, And slowly pass away.
Lo, warriors, saints, and sages, From out the vanished ages, With solemn pace and reverend face Appear and pass away.
The blaze of noonday splendour, The twilight soft and tender, May charm the eye: yet they shall die, Shall die and pass away.
But here, in Dreamland's centre, No spoiler's hand may enter, These visions fair, this radiance rare, Shall never pass away.
I see the shadows falling, The forms of old recalling; Around me tread the mighty dead, And slowly pass away.

A'ght. I am a Harry Potter fan. Yes, one of those old people who get wat too involved in the children's series. I've come to grips with it - you can too. 8) Here are some of my thoughts on future Potter happenings,
*Hermione loves Ron and vice versa *Neville is Voldemort's true Rival, not Harry *Harrry's Aunt is a squib. *The Mirror of Erised only reflects the one true desire that can come to pass.

Here's a link to the =http://www.tblog.com/template...den. They're beauties my boys. But why them?
Superficially, it's all in the eyes. Each of these guys have eyes to die for.
Individually, they are unique, talented and not frightened to push the envelope - yeah, even the backstreet boy. In short, they (at least give the impression of) are courageous, brave and bold.
I have the same impression of Angelina Jolie, damaged but brave. Someone who is not afraid of who they are, what they've been through and what they are talented at.
Of course these are only some famous faces I admire. A girl can't share all her secrets you know...

The Madonna.
11.02.03 (7:33 pm)
Not the pop star. The Madonna. Mary mother of God/ an itenerant preacher/a revolutionary/ a murder victim or litereary figure - however you prefer to think of her.
Raised in the christian tradition, I must confess she is not a character I've thought a lot about. Shallow images of a young woman on a donkey being led into Bethlehem and the well known Madonna and Child images are ghosts in my memory.
By accident I caught the end of one of the Discovery Channel's documentaries about The Life of Christ focusing on Mary. (rule #1, never believe everything the discovery channel tells you, #2, somewhere in there is usually a grain of truth, #3, it helps to have a degree in History and Anthropology to screen the chaff.) I digress, the documentary stimulated me to think of Mary as I had never before. A woman, a mother who sat and watched her first born die by cruxifiction.
What would it be like? A mother helplessy watching her son tortured... Did she somehow know the inevitability of his fate? Was she tortured for the rest of her days? Unimagineable.
The women of the Bible are such mysteries. We're not told much about them but when forced to put ourselves in their respective places - - - how do I explain it? they had limited choices, they had limited expression, yet they had a full range of emotion and imagination - how did they live their lives?
Ah, well, I've thought too hard tonight already - especially for someone who fell away from the church so long ago. Time for some mindless tv - GIGO folks. GIGO.

Symptoms of Inner Peace:
A tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than on fears based on past experience An unmistakable ability to enjoy the moment A loss of interest in judging other people A loss of interest in judging self A loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others An inability to worry (this is a very serious symptom!) Frequent overwhelming episodes of appreciation Frequent acts of smiling An increasing tendency to let things happen rather than to make them happen An increased susceptibility to the love extended by others as well as the uncontrollable urge to extend it.

Angel sung by Sarah McLachlan from "City of Angels"
Spend all your time waiting for that second chance For the break that will make it OK There's always some reason to feel not good enough And it's hard at the end of the day I need some distraction or a beautiful release Memories seep from my veins Let me be empty and weightless and maybe I'll find some peace tonight.
In the arms of the Angel far away from here From this dark, cold hotel room, and the endlessness that you fear You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie You're in the arms of the Angel; may you find some comfort here.
So tired of the straight line, that everywhere you turn There's vultures and thieves at your back The storm keeps on twisting, you keep on building the lies That you make up for all that you lack It don't make no difference, escape one last time It's easier to believe In this sweet madness, oh this glorious sadness That brings me to my knees.
In the arms of the Angel far away from here From this dark, cold hotel room, and the endlessness that you fear You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie You're in the arms of the Angel; may you find some comfort here.
In the arms of the Angel; may you find some comfort here.
